Interview with Asia DeVinyl In March of '09 I was introducing my son on to the original StarTrek series which got me thinking about doing a Space Girl pinup, but being in a retro mood I opted for the 50's sci-fi look. I had just talked to Asia on the phone for the first time and she was so sweet that the result was "Miss Retro Rocket"
I met Asia and her husband Joe at Viva Las Vegas and she was even nicer in person than she'd been on the phone. I am naturally very shy and both she and Joe treated me like an old friend.
They were both so cool that I decided to do a pinup for Joe who was about to ship out to Iraq. I call it "DeVinyl Delivery" and it features Joe, Asia and their heavily customized '53 Chevy wagon.

What are your top 5 favorite bands? Ok, seriously...
I could never name only 5 bands! How about 5 genres? 80's Goth, 80's New
Wave, Classic Rockabilly, Psychobilly and Garage Surf. What
other pinups work do you admire OR who inspired you?
I am really inspired by RitaHayworth, Sophia Loren, Raquel Welch, Jayne
Mansfield, Mae West, Vampira, Elvira, Lily Munster, Morticia Addams and
my beautiful grandmother. What
accessory can't you live without?
High heels make the leg, long nails make the hands, false eyelashes make
the eyes and corsets make the body.
What is your favorite pre 1970 vehicle? I love the
1959 Cadillac Hearse and the Munsters oach built by George Barris. I mean,
really? SOOOOO cool! Oh, I also love the car driven by Cruella Deville,
but it was built in 1974. What's
your all time favorite movie? Again, almost impossible
to choose. But I have to go with The Princess Bride. I know every single
word! (Cry Baby is a tie!) What
sage advice do you have to offer new models?
Actually, when I get emails asking me for advice, I send them to Heidi
Van Horne's Pinup advice column at Java's Bachelor Pad! She has some wonderful
articles posted and I wish that I had had something like that to refer
to when I was starting out! But the best words of wisdom I can give is
to never let anyone talk you into something that you don't want to do
and always take a friend with you. Do
you have any tattoos? I have tattoos around each
wrist, one on the back of my neck, two on my toes and my most meaningful
tattoo of all: the ankh on my left arm. The ankh is an Egyptian symbol
meaning everlasting life and harmony. But the scroll pattern inside of
my ankh is the same pattern as my wedding ring. So, to me it means everlasting
LOVE and harmony. How
did you pick your stage name? Asia has been my nickname
since I was 15 years old. DeVinyl came from my first AOL screen name back
in 1998: VinylSeductress. List one thing people are surprised to learn about you? That I'm nice! I've had so many people tell me that they thought I was going to be a complete bitch or something and that they were relieved to find out that I'm funny and down to earth. The truth is, I'm just a big dork! |
